This sculpture is a smaller-scale version of the monumental ensemble Vicente de Espona created as a tribute to everyday life in rural Andalusia. Inspired by a scene the artist witnessed, it depicts a farming family returning after a day’s work in the olive groves.
The elongated, stylised figures retain the simplified forms characteristic of Espona’s work. A man on horseback, several women on foot and a child led by the hand move together within a single narrative composition. The group’s linear arrangement, symbolism and sense of movement recall the tradition of narrative reliefs.
With its strong sense of place and personal feeling, Regreso del Olivar is one of the most representative examples of Vicente de Espona’s public and monumental work. This smaller version retains the expressive force of the original ensemble while allowing a closer view of the bronze modelling and its characteristic green patina.
The sculpture transforms an everyday scene into a symbol of life, work and the cultural identity of Andalusia.
