This bronze sculpture depicts a stylised female figure whose anatomy Vicente de Espona reduces to its essential forms. Flowing curves, elongated proportions and continuous volumes connect the body to organic shapes reminiscent of cells or amoebae.
The abstract, featureless head gives the figure a universal, timeless quality. The emphasis on the torso and bust suggests fertility and the capacity to create life. Through a visual language that is both simple and powerful, the work reflects on the origins of life and the feminine form.
The sculpture belongs to the artist’s mature period, when formal abstraction coexisted with symbolism closely linked to the female figure and motherhood.
Mujer Ameba has been on permanent display at Sala de Arte Diógenes and has also appeared in other solo exhibitions. Its pared-back forms, strong verticality and expressive patina make it a representative example of this aspect of Vicente de Espona’s work.
